What does the Shahada mean?
The Shahada is a declaration of belief in the oneness of Allah and in Muhammad as His Messenger.
When you say the Shahada sincerely, you are affirming that there is no one worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
Who is Allah?
Allah is the one true God, the Creator and Sustainer of everything that exists.
In Islam, Allah is One, without partner or equal. He alone is worthy of worship, and He is the Most Merciful and Most Compassionate.
What does the word “Allah” actually mean in Arabic?
“Allah” (الله) is the Arabic word for God. Arabic-speaking Muslims, Christians, and Jews can all use the word “Allah” when referring to God.
The word refers to the one God — the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. In Islam, “Allah” is not the name of a different god; it is the Arabic word used for the one God worshipped by the prophets.
Muslims believe that this is the same one God worshipped by all of His prophets, from Adam and Noah to Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and the many prophets who came after them, ending with Muhammad (peace be upon them all).
Why is the oneness of God so important?
The oneness of God, known in Islam as Tawhid, is at the heart of the Islamic faith. Allah is One, without partner, equal, or rival, and He alone is worthy of worship.
Allah has no father or mother, no son or daughter, and no partner. He was not born, nor does He give birth. He is eternal and independent of all creation, while everything that exists depends upon Him.
This is beautifully expressed in Surah Al-Ikhlas: “He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.”
This belief in the absolute oneness of Allah is the foundation of the message brought by the prophets — from Adam and Noah to Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, and all the prophets between them, peace be upon them all.
Who is Muhammad?
Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the final prophet and messenger of Allah in Islam. Muslims believe that Allah sent him to call people to worship the one true God and to live according to His guidance.
He was born in Makkah in Arabia and lived in the 6th and 7th centuries CE. At the age of forty, he received the first revelation of the Qur'an through the Angel Jibril (Gabriel). Revelation continued throughout his prophethood for approximately twenty-three years.
Muhammad taught that there is only one God, Allah, and that He alone is worthy of worship. He called people to prayer, honesty, mercy, justice, charity, and good character.
Muslims do not worship Muhammad. They believe he was a human being and the Messenger of Allah, and they follow his example and teachings. When Muslims mention his name, they commonly say “peace be upon him” as a sign of respect.
His message continued the same call to worship the one God brought by the prophets before him, from Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, peace be upon them all.
Are there any rules about who can become a Muslim?
Islam is open to every person. There is no requirement to be born into a Muslim family, belong to a particular race or nationality, or come from a particular culture. Anyone who sincerely believes in the oneness of Allah and accepts Muhammad as His Messenger can become a Muslim.
To enter Islam, a person makes the declaration of faith known as the Shahada: “I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
Becoming Muslim is not about changing your ethnicity, nationality, name, or culture. It is about believing in Allah, accepting His guidance, and sincerely declaring the Shahada.
There is no special ceremony required, and a person does not need to be in a mosque or have an imam present. The important thing is that the Shahada is understood and sincerely believed. After entering Islam, a person can continue learning about the faith and gradually grow in their practice.
Islam teaches that guidance is for everyone, and that no one should be forced into a particular faith. The decision to embrace Islam is a personal one, made sincerely and willingly by the person themselves.
Can I come back another time to say the Shahada?
You can always return to Allah, but if you already believe and sincerely want to embrace Islam, there is no need to keep putting it off. None of us knows how long we will live or when our time will come.
Sometimes a person thinks, “I will do it later,” and then days become weeks, weeks become months, and the decision is continually delayed. In Islam, Satan (Shaytan) seeks to distract people, fill them with doubts, and encourage them to postpone turning to Allah. Do not let those distractions keep you drifting away from a decision you already know is important to you.
If you sincerely believe in the oneness of Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, you do not need to wait for a perfect moment. You can say the Shahada today, sincerely and willingly, and begin your journey as a Muslim.
No special ceremony is required, and you do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. You can continue learning and growing in your faith after saying the Shahada.
What does it mean to become Muslim?
Becoming Muslim means accepting Islam as your faith and sincerely believing in the oneness of Allah and the message of His Messenger, Muhammad ( peace be upon him ).
Saying the Shahada is the declaration of this faith. You do not need to know everything about Islam before becoming Muslim. Learning and practicing Islam is a journey that continues after the Shahada.
What happens after the Shahada?
After sincerely declaring the Shahada, you are officially a Muslim. By Allah’s permission and mercy, your past sins are forgiven when you enter Islam. You begin a new life with a clean slate, so do not let your past discourage you from moving forward.
There is no need to know everything at once. Begin by learning how to pray, getting to know the Qur’an, and learning the basic teachings of Islam. Take your time and learn step by step.,
You can also connect with a local mosque or a trusted Muslim community if you would like guidance and support.
Learn, listen, and take your first step in Islam.
